About our mentor program

The Alt Protein Project recognizes that universities drive innovation and societal growth—and that students are the changemakers within them. Our community thrives on the advocacy and leadership of student champions, who gain momentum through direct mentorship from experts across the alternative protein ecosystem.

Each group partners with a regional mentor who provides strategic guidance and fosters connections with local stakeholders. This relationship offers two key benefits: mentors help groups tap into industry networks, research communities, and other ecosystems that open valuable opportunities on campus and beyond. At the same time, they deliver hands-on support in leadership and project management, enabling students to grow professionally within the community.

Meet our mentors

Community mentors

Countless professionals from around the world strengthen the alternative protein ecosystem by volunteering their time and expertise to support the next generation of leaders. Our community mentors contribute strategic, regionally specific insights shaped by their experience across the alternative protein value chain. Many of them launched their own alternative protein careers through the Alt Protein Project—and now give back to help others do the same.

Nothing prepares a mentor better than firsthand experience. After graduating, our alumni mentors choose to stay engaged by shifting from leadership roles to advisory ones. They exemplify what it means to pay it forward—supporting students who are navigating the same opportunities and challenges they once faced—and they create a strong bridge between the student community and GFI.

Olivia calkins

Olivia Calkins

Program Coordinator, Tufts University Center for Cellular Agriculture (TUCCA)

Alum of: The Tufts Alt Protein Project

Groups mentored

Location: United States

Mentor bio

My name is Olivia and I am a 2024 alumni from Tufts where I studied Chemical Engineering with minors in food systems & cellular agriculture!

During my time at Tufts, I worked in the Kaplan Lab for three years focusing on cell line development, scale-up, and metabolic optimization of insect cell culture for cultivated meat applications.

Since graduation, I have spent the past year working in the Cell Ag Commercialization Lab at Tufts where I have spearheaded the creation of the world’s first open-access cell bank for cultivated meat.

Now, I am heading to Imperial College London to begin my PhD under Dr. Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro, where I will be developing an automated CRISPR-based pipeline for precision fermentation.

I am thrilled to be a mentor for the APP, as starting & leading a chapter at Tufts was one of the most rewarding experiences of my undergraduate career! I will always be available to bounce ideas off of, leverage my network, help with tough conversations, and general emotional support as you become an APP leader! 🙂

Analyst

Alum of: The UPenn Alt Protein Project

Groups mentored

Location: United States

Mentor bio

My name is Grace Dai, and I recently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. and M.S. in Biology. At Penn, my research focused on developing computational methods to investigate the resistance of dairy cow microbiomes to methane inhibitors. Post-grad, I’ll be working at Bessemer Venture Partners, where I’ll be evaluating and making investments in early-stage startups across a variety of sectors, including biotech.

As a mentor, I hope to provide you with the resources to allow others to leverage their own ideas and leadership style to implement their goals. I’ll be there to answer any questions you have or just be a sounding board and support system when you’re feeling down. Building the UPenn APP chapter has been both an extremely challenging and rewarding process for me, and I can’t wait to be a small part of that process at other campuses, too.

Mentor bio

My name is Kalep Filli, and I’m an academic from Nigeria. I’m a professor and expert in food engineering and process optimization with a Post–Doc in Biopolymer Extrusion.  Being a mentor for APP student leaders, to me, is more than just sharing knowledge—it’s about empowering them to grow by showing an authentic interest in my mentee’s goals. My goal is to give mentees my full attention, ask thoughtful questions, and validate their experiences. I hope to help them navigate challenges rather than telling them exactly what to do, allowing them to develop their own insights and solutions.

Location: United States

Mentor bio

I come to GFI with a background in research science, education, and program management. This role has allowed me to marry my passions for scientific innovation, mentoring the next generation of leaders, and environmental stewardship. Working with the APP community keeps me motivated like nothing else I’ve worked on before!

I have found that my mentees already grasp almost all of the insight or knowledge I could share. Alt Protein Project students are some of the most driven and impactful leaders I have ever had the pleasure of working with. That means my role is often to provide an outside perspective, help them connect the dots, and provide a scaffold on which the students can build their own solutions.
