About

The Alt Protein Project at NC State strives to develop a dynamic ecosystem for alternative proteins on and around our campus. Leveraging NC State University’s renowned programs in food science, engineering, cell agriculture, biology, and environmental sciences, we aim to propel innovation and growth in the alternative protein sector. Additionally, NC State conducts cutting-edge research via the NC Food Innovation Lab, the nation’s only facility with cGMP capabilities dedicated to supporting plant-based food innovators and the region’s only FDA-inspected food manufacturing pilot plant. Furthermore, the Bezos Earth Fund awarded NC State $30 million over five years, beginning in 2024, to lead a center of excellence to create a biomanufacturing hub for dietary proteins that are environmentally friendly, healthy, tasty and affordable.

The mission of the Alt Protein Project at NC State is to build a diverse and inclusive community passionate about this field, raise awareness, and establish collaborative partnerships with industry and academia to contribute to the growing alternative protein landscape.
