The IIT Madras Smart Protein Project

About

The IIT Madras Smart Protein Project is a  student community focused on expanding awareness, education, research and innovation for the smart protein sector in India. 

Our efforts are supported by faculty at IIT Madras, including our group’s faculty advisor, Meiyappan Lakshmanan, whose research interest is in biopharmaceutical, cultivated meat manufacturing and multi-omics.. In addition, IIT Madras has many courses and faculty specializing in disciplines that are relevant to alternative protein science, including bioprocessing. Students of IIT Madras are environmentally-conscious and focused on a sustainable future for all, as evidenced by the formation of the Plant-Based Society, an active student organization dedicated to promoting plant-based diets. We also have access to a Bioincubator in our research park that provides guidance and funding to startups. For these reasons, we believe IIT Madras is truly fertile ground to become an alternative protein hub.
