About
The UFRPE Alt Protein Project is a student-led group that promotes the research, development, and innovation of alternative protein products.
We are part of a university with a strong presence in rural extension and research applied to the realities seen in the Northeastern region of Brazil. We work in partnership with the Agricultural Institute of Pernambuco (IPA), which collaborates with family farmers and traditional communities that have preserved and cultivated bean varieties from generation to generation, maintaining an extensive genetic variability.
We believe alternative protein products, such as ones utilizing these plant-based protein sources and other untapped sources of protein, hold much promise for the future of food in Brazil. We are excited to be supporting the expansion of the alternative protein industry starting with our university.
