To FSIS-USDA re U.S. Cattlemen’s Association’s petition to restrict labels

In 2018, GFI and several alternative protein companies urged USDA to reject the Cattlemen’s petition which asks it to exclude alternative proteins from the definition of “beef” and “meat.”

In September 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture denied the U.S. Cattlemen Association’s petition. USDA agreed with GFI and alternative protein companies that it lacks authority over plant-based meat labels and cited its work on an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) that will address cultivated meat labels.
