New resources to standardize cultivated meat research

Since its inception, the cultivated meat field has lacked commercially relevant cell lines and media formulations that can serve as a shared standard across the field. There is now an opportunity for the field to make these bovine cell lines into research workhorses analogous to CHO, HEK, and C2C12 cells.

Amongst these eight cell lines are the first publicly available suspension-adapted bovine cell lines with demonstrated success at 500L scale. These cells can help accelerate academic and commercial research and development, saving millions of dollars and shaving years off typical timelines.

More information on the cells and how to order can be found on the Tufts University cell line repository website. The serum-free media formulations are open-source and can be viewed and used by anyone below.

Multiple formulations are listed below. The FSF4 formulation is the most advanced version and was previously submitted to the US FDA for safety evaluation. The FSF6 formulation was an earlier iteration of the FSF4 formula. The modified FSF6-EZ formulation from Tufts University represents the recommended starting point for culturing the cells. The protocol for preparing FSF6-EZ is available at the Tufts cell bank webpage.
