Phasing out animal serum in cell culture

The long history of using animal serum such as fetal bovine serum (FBS) in cell culture has led many to believe that FBS is required to cultivate animal cells. However, this could not be further from the truth. Serum-free and even protein-free media have existed for decades, and over the last few years, this knowledge has been translated into cultivating cells from the variety of species used in cultivated meat and seafood production. In this resource, we’ve compiled the evidence showing that serum-free production of cultivated meat is already the norm, and that serum is well on the way to being entirely phased out of cultivated meat research.
