About
The Alt Protein Project at Howard University was founded to shape the future of food through education, research, and innovation in alternative proteins. Rooted in Howard University’s tradition of leadership, we aim to cultivate a dynamic, interdisciplinary community dedicated to developing sustainable, equitable, and science-based solutions to global food challenges. In alignment with Howard’s commitment to truth and service, we believe that rethinking how the world produces many of its protein sources is crucial to building a more resilient and equitable food system.
Through student-led initiatives we seek to elevate awareness of plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation-derived proteins as viable solutions to a variety of issues, including climate change, public health disparities, and food insecurity. Our focus is promoting interdisciplinary research by connecting students and faculty and providing resources for the Howard community to learn more about innovation in the alternative protein space. We are continually working to create an inclusive alternative protein network at Howard University to tackle ever-growing challenges.
