The Exeter Alt Protein Project is not currently active, but the previous leaders laid a great foundation for building The University of Exeter into an engine of alternative protein education, research, and innovation. If you want to help build upon that progress and restart The Exeter Alt Protein Project, please contact us directly! We would love to work with you and revitalize student leadership at The University of Exeter.
About
The Exeter Alt Protein Project aims to address the prevalent misconceptions surrounding veganism and promote sustainable food choices. The alarming environmental impact of industrialized animal agriculture demands action, and embracing alternative proteins is transitioning from being essential to becoming necessity for a healthier planet.
Through this student-led group, we aim to challenge perceptions, ignite conscious decision-making, and advocate for innovative ideas, from cultivated and plant-based meat to fermentation-derived products. We believe our interdisciplinary backgrounds will allow us to formulate alternative protein courses, create research platforms and avenues for job opportunities.
The University of Exeter is a strong fit for the Alt Protein Project due to its renowned research capabilities and commitment to innovation in the field of alternative proteins. The university boasts expertise in areas such as biochemical engineering, plant-based proteins, and mycoprotein research. Researchers at Exeter are already demonstrating the effectiveness of vegan protein in muscle building and we intend to support and conduct similar research studies.
With a focus on sustainable food production and a partnership with Quorn Foods for mycoprotein research, the university showcases a dedication to advancing alternative protein technologies. Additionally, the UKRI investments in alternative protein R&D at the University of Exeter, being almost £350 million pounds in Science and Engineering alone, highlight the University’s position as a leader in this emerging field. The university’s proximity to “Golden Triangle” around London further enhances its suitability for pioneering research and development.
