About

The Dartmouth Alt Protein Project works to establish alternative proteins as a serious field of study, research, and professional opportunity at Dartmouth College. As a liberal arts institution without a food science or agriculture program, Dartmouth has had little prior engagement with cultivated, fermentation-enabled, and plant-based proteins, a gap our chapter exists to close. We connect the College’s existing strengths to the future of food: biotechnology and materials science research at the Thayer School of Engineering, the analytical foundations of biology and the social sciences, and the venture support of the Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship. Drawing on Dartmouth’s strong institutional commitment to climate and sustainability, we aim to seed the first alternative protein coursework, research interest, and faculty engagement on campus, and to build an interdisciplinary community where students can pursue consequential work at the intersection of climate, food security, technological innovation, and animal welfare.
