About
At Appalachian State University, the Alt Protein Project is primarily focused on creating a dialogue around improving food sustainability through alternative proteins. Our main goal is to accelerate innovation and research in alternative proteins. We hope to inspire and equip students who are interested in pursuing careers in alternative proteins, while also creating a diverse and inclusive community on campus. Alternative proteins are not common knowledge at our university nor within our region and we aim to create excitement around more ethical and environmentally-friendly alternatives to traditional animal protein products. We are also particularly excited about alternative proteins in terms of the development of delicious and healthier products compared to traditional animal products.
App State has strong biology, nutrition, and chemistry research programs – disciplines that are relevant to alternative proteins. App State is home to the Research Institute for Environment, Energy and Economics, and a large sustainable development program that hosts classes in the Sustainable Development Teaching and Research Farm. With these programs and the minimal existing education on alternative proteins in Boone, the App State APP is passionate about bringing greater awareness and knowledge of alternative proteins to campus.
