Join Dr. Peter Stogios\, Senior Research Associate at BioZone at the University of Toronto\, who will discuss how his team lowered the cost of growth factors in serum-free media by more than 20-fold. His team engineered the recombinant production of multiple growth factor families\, including TGF-beta1 and FGF-2\, for inexpensive production in bacteria\, and discovered new growth factors from exotic species that outperform typically used growth factors in sustaining growth of multiple cell types. The protocols and reagents from this work are freely available to the cellular agriculture community. \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nRegister for the post-seminar networking session\n\n\n\nAfter the seminar\, we encourage you to join our optional networking event for alternative protein enthusiasts! SUMMARY:The Science of Alt Protein: Sustainable UK protein crop production
DESCRIPTION:The Science of Alt Protein: Sustainable UK protein crop productionPast\n\n\n\n\nJoin Dr. John Hammond\, Professor of Crop Science at the University of Reading\, to learn about current challenges facing the diversification of protein crops in the UK and a project his team is working on to address this hurdle. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. John Hammond \n\n\n\nProfessor\, University of Reading \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar description\n\n\n\nCrops delivering protein to the UK population have not changed significantly over the last 50 years. Wheat continues to be a dominant source of plant-based proteins in our diets. Changing dietary patterns to more plant-based diets and environmental pressures both on meat and intensive agriculture are driving opportunities to diversify protein crops in the UK. However\, market adoption and integration into new products are major barriers to these changes. \n\n\n\nJoin us for our next Science of Alt Protein seminar where Dr. John Hammond\, Professor at the University of Reading\, will share the current challenges facing protein crops in the UK and a project his team is embarking upon to address this hurdle. Opportunities to address these challenges through changes in cropping systems and the integration of bean flour into bakery products to replace imported soy flour will be discussed. \n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nJoin us after this event\n\n\n\nAfter the seminar\, we encourage you to join our optional networking event for alternative protein enthusiasts! We hope to see you there! \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. John Hammond\n\n\n\n\n\nPROFESSOR\, UNIVERSITY OF READING \n\n\n\nJohn Hammond is a Professor of Crop Science in the School of Agriculture\, Policy and Development and leads the University of Reading’s research into Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. He has published over 80 academic papers during his career and regularly contributes to discussions on the sustainability of our food production systems. Professor Hammond’s research has spanned a range of crops and has focused on the sustainability of their production. Fertilizer inputs to crops and adaptations to heat and drought stress are focal points of his research. \n\n\n\nProfessor Hammond graduated from the University of York with a 1st Class BSc in Applied and Environmental Biology (2000). He then continued his studies and completed a Ph.D. in Plant and Crop Science (2004) at the University of Nottingham. Undertaking a post-doc at the University of Warwick and then taking on a Group Leadership position there\, he led research into nutrient management of horticultural crops until 2010. In 2011\, he was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship at the University of Western Australia. He then returned to the UK in 2013 to take his current position at the University of Reading. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n McNamara Alumni Center\n \n \n \n Bridge2Food North America\n \n \n \n Join GFI at Bridge2Food North America\, where food industry leaders will gather to explore the latest developments in ingredient innovation and alternative proteins. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n FAO Headquarters\n \n \n \n World Food Forum 2026: Protein diversification for the Global South\n \n \n \n How can protein diversification strengthen food systems across the Global South? SUMMARY:Thermo Fisher Scientific: Alternative protein and plant-based meat
DESCRIPTION:Thermo Fisher Scientific: Alternative protein and plant-based meatPast\n\n\n\n\nThermo Fisher Scientific’s new weekly webinar series focuses on alternative proteins and plant-based meats. Tune in on Tuesdays beginning September 13th through October 18th where a new speaker will share their expertise during a talk followed by a 10-minute live Q&A session. GFI Senior Scientist\, Priera Panescu\, Ph.D\, will lead the talk on October 18th. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent description\n\n\n\nGFI Senior Scientist Priera Panescu\, Ph.D. will deliver a talk on the “effects of extrusion on protein functionality and digestibility” on October 18th at 11:30 am EDT. \n\n\n\nExtrusion is a scalable\, effective mechanical process that can create meat analogues with fibrous textures\, thus enhancing the taste and texture of alternative protein products. One potential bottleneck for consumer acceptability is that extrusion processing adds to conceptions that alternative protein products are “highly processed” and\, therefore\, unhealthy. In reality\, literature studies demonstrate that extrusion cooking enhances protein digestibility\, reduces antinutrient content\, and can reduce ingredient allergenicity. \n\n\n\nThis talk will review studies that demonstrate the effects of extrusion on plant protein digestibility and nutrition. There will also be an emphasis on research gaps that should be further explored to demonstrate the benefits and potential pitfalls of extrusion cooking for the production of meat analogues. \n\n\n\n\n\nGFI speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPriera Panescu\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\n\n\nSENIOR SCIENTIST – PLANT-BASED SPECIALIST \n\n\n\nPriera Panescu is focused on analyzing plant-based meat and proteins and how to best expedite their progress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Priera\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n McNamara Alumni Center\n \n \n \n Bridge2Food North America\n \n \n \n Join GFI at Bridge2Food North America\, where food industry leaders will gather to explore the latest developments in ingredient innovation and alternative proteins. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n FAO Headquarters\n \n \n \n World Food Forum 2026: Protein diversification for the Global South\n \n \n \n How can protein diversification strengthen food systems across the Global South?
