SUMMARY:Driving Innovation by synthetic biology and fermentation can solve challenges in food production and demand
DESCRIPTION:Driving Innovation by synthetic biology and fermentation can solve challenges in food production and demandPast\n\n\n\n\nGain a better understanding of the growing interest in synthetic biology for the food market in the Asia-Pacific region and learn about the importance of nitrogen sources in the fermentation process. You will hear from industry leaders from GFIC\, Allozymes\, and Procelys by Lesaffre. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent description\n\n\n\nGlobal protein consumption has risen over 45% since 2000. As much as 63% of this increase has been driven by the Asia-Pacific market. This is partly due to the rapid growth in synthetic biology\, which allows for the design of recombinant proteins that can be used for example in the production of alternative food products such as vegetarian and vegan meat replacements. \n\n\n\nTo keep up with the expanding market\, food producers will need to stay up to date on the latest advances in industrial fermentation for food applications. By connecting with fermentation and yeast-based nutrients experts\, food producers can optimize the production of recombinant proteins in industrial fermentation\, for example through the selection of a suitable nitrogen source for the fermentation process. \n\n\n\nAttend this event to hear from three industry experts about the use of synthetic biology to optimize recombinant protein expression for the food market. The program includes: \n\n\n\nAn introduction to the use of fermentation in the alternative protein marketA presentation on Allozymes’ technology for the development of custom enzymesA demonstration of how Procelys’ NuCel® products can address nutritional requirements and challenges in recombinant protein production\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n McNamara Alumni Center\n \n \n \n Bridge2Food North America\n \n \n \n Join GFI at Bridge2Food North America\, where food industry leaders will gather to explore the latest developments in ingredient innovation and alternative proteins. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n FAO Headquarters\n \n \n \n World Food Forum 2026: Protein diversification for the Global South\n \n \n \n How can protein diversification strengthen food systems across the Global South? Join Dr. Peter Stogios\, Senior Research Associate at BioZone at the University of Toronto\, who will discuss how his team lowered the cost of growth factors in serum-free media by more than 20-fold. His team engineered the recombinant production of multiple growth factor families\, including TGF-beta1 and FGF-2\, for inexpensive production in bacteria\, and discovered new growth factors from exotic species that outperform typically used growth factors in sustaining growth of multiple cell types. The protocols and reagents from this work are freely available to the cellular agriculture community. \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nRegister for the post-seminar networking session\n\n\n\nAfter the seminar\, we encourage you to join our optional networking event for alternative protein enthusiasts! Wheat continues to be a dominant source of plant-based proteins in our diets. Changing dietary patterns to more plant-based diets and environmental pressures both on meat and intensive agriculture are driving opportunities to diversify protein crops in the UK. However\, market adoption and integration into new products are major barriers to these changes. \n\n\n\nJoin us for our next Science of Alt Protein seminar where Dr. John Hammond\, Professor at the University of Reading\, will share the current challenges facing protein crops in the UK and a project his team is embarking upon to address this hurdle. Opportunities to address these challenges through changes in cropping systems and the integration of bean flour into bakery products to replace imported soy flour will be discussed. \n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nJoin us after this event\n\n\n\nAfter the seminar\, we encourage you to join our optional networking event for alternative protein enthusiasts! He has published over 80 academic papers during his career and regularly contributes to discussions on the sustainability of our food production systems. Professor Hammond’s research has spanned a range of crops and has focused on the sustainability of their production. Fertilizer inputs to crops and adaptations to heat and drought stress are focal points of his research. \n\n\n\nProfessor Hammond graduated from the University of York with a 1st Class BSc in Applied and Environmental Biology (2000). He then continued his studies and completed a Ph.D. in Plant and Crop Science (2004) at the University of Nottingham. Undertaking a post-doc at the University of Warwick and then taking on a Group Leadership position there\, he led research into nutrient management of horticultural crops until 2010. In 2011\, he was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship at the University of Western Australia.
