SUMMARY:Thermo Fisher Scientific: Alternative protein and plant-based meat
DESCRIPTION:Thermo Fisher Scientific: Alternative protein and plant-based meatPast\n\n\n\n\nThermo Fisher Scientific’s new weekly webinar series focuses on alternative proteins and plant-based meats. Tune in on Tuesdays beginning September 13th through October 18th where a new speaker will share their expertise during a talk followed by a 10-minute live Q&A session. GFI Senior Scientist\, Priera Panescu\, Ph.D\, will lead the talk on October 18th. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent description\n\n\n\nGFI Senior Scientist Priera Panescu\, Ph.D. will deliver a talk on the “effects of extrusion on protein functionality and digestibility” on October 18th at 11:30 am EDT. \n\n\n\nExtrusion is a scalable\, effective mechanical process that can create meat analogues with fibrous textures\, thus enhancing the taste and texture of alternative protein products. One potential bottleneck for consumer acceptability is that extrusion processing adds to conceptions that alternative protein products are “highly processed” and\, therefore\, unhealthy. In reality\, literature studies demonstrate that extrusion cooking enhances protein digestibility\, reduces antinutrient content\, and can reduce ingredient allergenicity. \n\n\n\nThis talk will review studies that demonstrate the effects of extrusion on plant protein digestibility and nutrition. There will also be an emphasis on research gaps that should be further explored to demonstrate the benefits and potential pitfalls of extrusion cooking for the production of meat analogues. \n\n\n\n\n\nGFI speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPriera Panescu\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\n\n\nSENIOR SCIENTIST – PLANT-BASED SPECIALIST \n\n\n\nPriera Panescu is focused on analyzing plant-based meat and proteins and how to best expedite their progress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Priera\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n McNamara Alumni Center\n \n \n \n Bridge2Food North America\n \n \n \n Join GFI at Bridge2Food North America\, where food industry leaders will gather to explore the latest developments in ingredient innovation and alternative proteins. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n FAO Headquarters\n \n \n \n World Food Forum 2026: Protein diversification for the Global South\n \n \n \n How can protein diversification strengthen food systems across the Global South? This trend is combined with the desire to improve the nutritional values of food products with the objective of enhancing the population’s health and well-being. These objectives have led to increased interest in food architecture design and development\, aiming to mimic traditional products with healthier\, more sustainable options.   \n\n\n\nJoin us for our next Science of Alt Protein seminar where Dr. Maya Davidovich-Pinhas\, Associate Professor at Technion\, will discuss the use of various molecular assemblies\, across multiple length scales\, to improve the nutritional value and sustainability of food by replacing harmful ingredients\, such as saturated fat\, while maintaining a positive consumer experience and desirable textural attributes. \n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nJoin us after this event\n\n\n\nAfter the seminar\, we encourage you to join our optional networking event for alternative protein enthusiasts! SUMMARY:The Science of Alt Protein: Plant-based meat alternatives for cardiovascular risk reduction
DESCRIPTION:The Science of Alt Protein: Plant-based meat alternatives for cardiovascular risk reductionPast\n\n\n\n\nWhat is the effect of consuming plant-based meat instead of animal meat on cardiovascular risk factors? Join us for our next Science of Alt Protein seminar\, where Dr. Christopher Gardner will share the details of his SWAP-MEAT trial that was designed to answer this question. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar description\n\n\n\nA typical question regarding hot topics in nutrition tends to be framed as “Is X good for me?” This type of question lacks context and framing and\, as such\, is unanswerable. Better questions address the context of “instead of what?” and “with what?”. Join us for our next Science of Alt Protein seminar where Professor Gardner will address this context and the steps to minimize bias in reporting regarding his recently published SWAP-MEAT study — the Study With Appetizing Plant-food — a Meat Eating Alternative Trial. \n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Christopher Gardner\n\n\n\nPROFESSOR\, STANFORD UNIVERSITY \n\n\n\nChristopher Gardner holds a Ph.D. in Nutrition Science and is the Rehnborg Farquhar Professor of Medicine at Stanford. He is a co-author of the 2019 ADA Consensus Report on Nutrition Therapy for Adults With Diabetes or Prediabetes (Diabetes Care)\, and the current chair of the American Heart Association Nutrition Committee. For ~30 years his research has examined what to eat and what to avoid for optimal health. This includes more than 20 nutrition intervention trials conducted with >2\,000 participants. The primary study outcomes in these trials are typically cardiometabolic factors (e.g.\, insulin\, glucose\, lipids\, blood pressure\, inflammation/immune function\, body composition). Relevant to this presentation is his 2020 SWAP-MEAT trial which will be covered in detail. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n McNamara Alumni Center\n \n \n \n Bridge2Food North America\n \n \n \n Join GFI at Bridge2Food North America\, where food industry leaders will gather to explore the latest developments in ingredient innovation and alternative proteins. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n FAO Headquarters\n \n \n \n World Food Forum 2026: Protein diversification for the Global South\n \n \n \n How can protein diversification strengthen food systems across the Global South?
