SUMMARY:The Science of Alt Protein: Plant-based meat alternatives for cardiovascular risk reduction
DESCRIPTION:The Science of Alt Protein: Plant-based meat alternatives for cardiovascular risk reductionPast\n\n\n\n\nWhat is the effect of consuming plant-based meat instead of animal meat on cardiovascular risk factors? Join us for our next Science of Alt Protein seminar\, where Dr. Christopher Gardner will share the details of his SWAP-MEAT trial that was designed to answer this question. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar description\n\n\n\nA typical question regarding hot topics in nutrition tends to be framed as “Is X good for me?” This type of question lacks context and framing and\, as such\, is unanswerable. Better questions address the context of “instead of what?” and “with what?”. Join us for our next Science of Alt Protein seminar where Professor Gardner will address this context and the steps to minimize bias in reporting regarding his recently published SWAP-MEAT study — the Study With Appetizing Plant-food — a Meat Eating Alternative Trial. \n\n\n\n\n\nMeet the speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Christopher Gardner\n\n\n\nPROFESSOR\, STANFORD UNIVERSITY \n\n\n\nChristopher Gardner holds a Ph.D. in Nutrition Science and is the Rehnborg Farquhar Professor of Medicine at Stanford. He is a co-author of the 2019 ADA Consensus Report on Nutrition Therapy for Adults With Diabetes or Prediabetes (Diabetes Care)\, and the current chair of the American Heart Association Nutrition Committee. For ~30 years his research has examined what to eat and what to avoid for optimal health. This includes more than 20 nutrition intervention trials conducted with >2\,000 participants. The primary study outcomes in these trials are typically cardiometabolic factors (e.g.\, insulin\, glucose\, lipids\, blood pressure\, inflammation/immune function\, body composition). Relevant to this presentation is his 2020 SWAP-MEAT trial which will be covered in detail. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n November 12\, 2026\n \n Virtual Event\n \n \n \n The Science of Alt Protein: Genome-scale modeling of porcine cell metabolism\n \n \n \n Explore how a GFI-funded genome-scale metabolic model can reveal porcine cell nutrient requirements and inform lower-cost culture media for cultivated…

DESCRIPTION:The Science of Alt Protein: Sustainable UK protein crop productionPast\n\n\n\n\nJoin Dr. John Hammond\, Professor of Crop Science at the University of Reading\, to learn about current challenges facing the diversification of protein crops in the UK and a project his team is working on to address this hurdle. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. John Hammond \n\n\n\nProfessor\, University of Reading \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar description\n\n\n\nCrops delivering protein to the UK population have not changed significantly over the last 50 years. Wheat continues to be a dominant source of plant-based proteins in our diets. Changing dietary patterns to more plant-based diets and environmental pressures both on meat and intensive agriculture are driving opportunities to diversify protein crops in the UK. However\, market adoption and integration into new products are major barriers to these changes. \n\n\n\nJoin us for our next Science of Alt Protein seminar where Dr. John Hammond\, Professor at the University of Reading\, will share the current challenges facing protein crops in the UK and a project his team is embarking upon to address this hurdle. Opportunities to address these challenges through changes in cropping systems and the integration of bean flour into bakery products to replace imported soy flour will be discussed. \n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nJoin us after this event\n\n\n\nAfter the seminar\, we encourage you to join our optional networking event for alternative protein enthusiasts! Professor Hammond’s research has spanned a range of crops and has focused on the sustainability of their production. Fertilizer inputs to crops and adaptations to heat and drought stress are focal points of his research. \n\n\n\nProfessor Hammond graduated from the University of York with a 1st Class BSc in Applied and Environmental Biology (2000). He then continued his studies and completed a Ph.D. in Plant and Crop Science (2004) at the University of Nottingham. Undertaking a post-doc at the University of Warwick and then taking on a Group Leadership position there\, he led research into nutrient management of horticultural crops until 2010. In 2011\, he was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship at the University of Western Australia. He then returned to the UK in 2013 to take his current position at the University of Reading. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n November 12\, 2026\n \n Virtual Event\n \n \n \n The Science of Alt Protein: Genome-scale modeling of porcine cell metabolism\n \n \n \n Explore how a GFI-funded genome-scale metabolic model can reveal porcine cell nutrient requirements and inform lower-cost culture media for cultivated…
