SUMMARY:Thermo Fisher Scientific: Alternative protein and plant-based meat
DESCRIPTION:Thermo Fisher Scientific: Alternative protein and plant-based meatPast\n\n\n\n\nThermo Fisher Scientific’s new weekly webinar series focuses on alternative proteins and plant-based meats. Tune in on Tuesdays beginning September 13th through October 18th where a new speaker will share their expertise during a talk followed by a 10-minute live Q&A session. GFI Senior Scientist\, Priera Panescu\, Ph.D\, will lead the talk on October 18th. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent description\n\n\n\nGFI Senior Scientist Priera Panescu\, Ph.D. will deliver a talk on the “effects of extrusion on protein functionality and digestibility” on October 18th at 11:30 am EDT. \n\n\n\nExtrusion is a scalable\, effective mechanical process that can create meat analogues with fibrous textures\, thus enhancing the taste and texture of alternative protein products. One potential bottleneck for consumer acceptability is that extrusion processing adds to conceptions that alternative protein products are “highly processed” and\, therefore\, unhealthy. In reality\, literature studies demonstrate that extrusion cooking enhances protein digestibility\, reduces antinutrient content\, and can reduce ingredient allergenicity. \n\n\n\nThis talk will review studies that demonstrate the effects of extrusion on plant protein digestibility and nutrition. There will also be an emphasis on research gaps that should be further explored to demonstrate the benefits and potential pitfalls of extrusion cooking for the production of meat analogues. \n\n\n\n\n\nGFI speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPriera Panescu\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\n\n\nSENIOR SCIENTIST – PLANT-BASED SPECIALIST \n\n\n\nPriera Panescu is focused on analyzing plant-based meat and proteins and how to best expedite their progress. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Priera\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n McNamara Alumni Center\n \n \n \n Bridge2Food North America\n \n \n \n Join GFI at Bridge2Food North America\, where food industry leaders will gather to explore the latest developments in ingredient innovation… \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n FAO Headquarters\n \n \n \n World Food Forum 2026: Protein diversification for the Global South\n \n \n \n How can protein diversification strengthen food systems across the Global South? SUMMARY:Driving Innovation by synthetic biology and fermentation can solve challenges in food production and demand
DESCRIPTION:Driving Innovation by synthetic biology and fermentation can solve challenges in food production and demandPast\n\n\n\n\nGain a better understanding of the growing interest in synthetic biology for the food market in the Asia-Pacific region and learn about the importance of nitrogen sources in the fermentation process. You will hear from industry leaders from GFIC\, Allozymes\, and Procelys by Lesaffre. \n\n\n\n	Share this page on Facebook\n	\n	Share on Facebook\n\n\n	Share this page on Twitter\n	\n	Share on X\n\n\n	Share this page on LinkedIn\n	\n	Share on LinkedIn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent description\n\n\n\nGlobal protein consumption has risen over 45% since 2000. As much as 63% of this increase has been driven by the Asia-Pacific market. This is partly due to the rapid growth in synthetic biology\, which allows for the design of recombinant proteins that can be used for example in the production of alternative food products such as vegetarian and vegan meat replacements. \n\n\n\nTo keep up with the expanding market\, food producers will need to stay up to date on the latest advances in industrial fermentation for food applications. By connecting with fermentation and yeast-based nutrients experts\, food producers can optimize the production of recombinant proteins in industrial fermentation\, for example through the selection of a suitable nitrogen source for the fermentation process. \n\n\n\nAttend this event to hear from three industry experts about the use of synthetic biology to optimize recombinant protein expression for the food market. The program includes: \n\n\n\nAn introduction to the use of fermentation in the alternative protein marketA presentation on Allozymes’ technology for the development of custom enzymesA demonstration of how Procelys’ NuCel® products can address nutritional requirements and challenges in recombinant protein production\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUpcoming events\n\n\n\nView all events\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n McNamara Alumni Center\n \n \n \n Bridge2Food North America\n \n \n \n Join GFI at Bridge2Food North America\, where food industry leaders will gather to explore the latest developments in ingredient innovation… \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 13\, 2026\n FAO Headquarters\n \n \n \n World Food Forum 2026: Protein diversification for the Global South\n \n \n \n How can protein diversification strengthen food systems across the Global South? Currently\, more than 70 startups around the globe are hard at work\, aspiring to build a sustainable and humane new food system as a solution to conventional animal agriculture. But what is it exactly\, and where does the idea come from? \n\n\n\nIra van Eelan is the daughter of Willem van Eelan\, the late Dutch researcher who pioneered the development of cultivated meat and is known as the Godfather of the movement. Continuing in his legacy\, Ira is the co-founder and CEO of Kind Earth Tech. Dr. Uma Valeti is a Mayo Clinic-trained cardiologist turned CEO and entrepreneur. In 2015 he co-founded Memphis Meats (rebranded as Upside Foods)\, the world’s largest cultivated meat company\, featured in Meat the Future. Isha Datar has been pioneering the field of cellular agriculture for the past decade. She’s the Executive Director of New Harvest\, a research institute advancing the science behind cultivated meat. Jessica Almy is the Vice President of Policy for The Good Food Institute\, leading GFI’s Policy team in setting legislative and regulatory strategy to promote fair policies and public research for cultivated meat. \n\n\n\nThis free\, virtual and recorded 50-minute panel discussion concludes with a brief Q&A with the public. This is especially crucial in countries where smallholder farmers still struggle to get their yield up\, to meet rising demand. On the ecological front\, the growth of alternative proteins represents a sustainable alternative to business-as-usual animal agriculture. Many start-ups and entrepreneurs in this growing space are now working to solve agricultural challenges such as low agricultural productivity\, poor efficiency in the supply chain and lack of access to credits and loans. \n\n\n\nThis has led to the sector witnessing an investment boom\, despite the pandemic. What are some of the unrealized potential in the food and AgriTech sectors? Can it evolve to solve the impending food security crises? Attend this session to hear thoughts from industry experts. \n\n\n\n\n\nGFI speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShuli Goh\n\n\n\n\n\nPOLICY SPECIALIST\, GFI APAC \n\n\n\nShuli is GFI’s Policy Specialist for the APAC region.
